(A)pollonia
The latest production by Polish stage director Krzysztof Warlikowski caused a stir at the 2009 Avignon Festival. In '(A)pollonia', he calls on the tragic authors, namely Euripides and Aeschylus, as well as contemporary writers Jonathan Littell, John Maxwell Coetzee and Hanna Krall, and examines the different facets of sacrifice and offering, revenge and forgiveness and executioner and victim.
After his extraordinary staging of Cherubini's Medea two years ago, he brings us a gripping show, refined by the intense performance of the actors, the music and the elegant and effective use of video. Warlikowski helps us decipher our nightmares, our desires and our dreams.
4, 5 & 6 December 2009 – Théâtre National
Zeitung
In Zeitung, choreographer Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker, pianist Alain Franco and the Rosas dancers go in search of the delicate combination of music and dance, choreography and improvisation, romanticism and disenchantment. In this work, Bach, Schoenberg and Webern embody a historical perspective in which the principles of geometry and the trump cards of Rosas' choreographic improvisation meet, in harmony or unsynchronised, in unison or in counterpoint. In Zeitung, the convergence of dance and music is not based on a resemblance or a parallel, but on the intersection of the two.
From 16 to 19 December 2009 - Kaaitheater
Recital Bejun Mehta
The charm of his voice as well as his love of singing captivated Brussels' audiences in 2007, in his role as Farnace in Mozart's Mitridate. Countertenor Bejun Mehta and pianist Julius Drake will take us on a journey through four centuries of English melodies. A unique musical moment combining joy and melancholy.
14 December 2009 - Théâtre Royal du Parc
Hélène aux Enfers
Famous tales from classical mythology (Orpheus' descent to the Underworld, the golden apple which contributes to triggering the Trojan War) and the romantic misfortunes of a duchess (in the essential Gerolstein) undergo Offenbach's satirical touch, with many allusions to events and figures of his time, and without sparing bourgeois morality. Offenbach had become a master at introducing absurdities into 'lofty' themes, and still today, his librettos have a comic effect thanks to their countless puns. Hélène aux Enfers presents a sample of these in a pastiche of three of Offenbach's most famous opéras bouffes in an arrangement by Charlie Degotte.
17 & 19 December 2009 – La Monnaie
