La Monnaie - 1 FILM / 1 ARTIST
La Monnaie ¦ MM Extra ¦ 1 FILM / 1 ARTIST ¦ Intro

Ivo van Hove

Films feed the imagination of certain opera composers and stage directors. Since last season, La Monnaie and GALERIES cinéma have organised regular events allowing a better understanding of the poetic universe of some of the contemporary artists included in the programme at La Monnaie. It is a unique occasion to listen to and speak with a creator, and to (re)discover a great film from the repertoire. Beginning this season, we have teamed up with the Théâtre National. You are thus also invited to discover several artists from one of Brussels’ major theatres in a unique way.

The idea is a simple one: each guest artist is free to choose one or more films. To accompany the showing of these films the artist will be invited to talk for 45 minutes, explaining and justifying their choice and evoking the personal links they cultivate with cinema in the context of their artistic activities.

Belgian artist Ivo van Hove, stage director of the new production of La Clemenza di Tito, has chosen to show Ultimo Tango a Parigi, Bernardo Bertolucci's masterpiece.
Since its release in 1972, this film – which boldly presents the intense and desperate relationship which develops between two strangers – caused an eternal scandal. Marlon Brando and Maria Schneider portray a lovers’ tango destined for destruction.

The film will follow a 45-minute discussion with Ivo van Hove (in English).
