After the Rehearsal / Persona
Ivo Van Hove
After the Rehearsal is a play about the meaning of the theatre. For the director the theatre is his life. His productions are like an autobiography. He lives in and through the theatre. The theatre, the world of illusions is real to him. Persona starts with an actress on the top of her career who suddenly stops acting in the middle of a performance and refuses to talk anymore. She is brought to a hospital and is taken care of by a young nurse. For the actress her life has become empty, without meaning. The nurse tries to give her back her lust for life. But deep down she feels the same dissatisfaction. Both texts investigate the meaning of art in our lives and therefore in our society. As always Ingmar Bergman does this in a very personal and human way. Hard and tender at the same time. With this producion, director Ivo van Hove gives a theatrical adaptation of two movies of the Swedish cineaste.
