DESCRIPTION:Short synopsis\nIn Venice\, the young Gennaro is in love with a
beautiful stranger whom his friends recognise as being Lucrezia Borgia. L
ucrezia recognises him as the illegitimate son whom she was forced to aban
don at birth. Gennaro provokes the Borgias but escapes the vengeance of Lu
crezia's husband Alfonso\, Duke of Ferrare: Lucrezia gives him an antidote
for the poisoned wine offered to him by Alfonso. At a party the next day\
, Lucrezia poisons Gennaro's friends and is not aware that Gennaro has dru
nk the poison as well. When he learns what has happened he threatens to st
ab her. She tells him that she is his mother and offers him a new antidote
\, but he refuses to take it and dies with his friends. Lucrezia remains a
lone and broken.\nGaetano Donizetti\nThe active life of Gaetano Donizetti
(1797-1848) as an opera composer began in 1818 (leaving aside a few earlie
r works) and ended in 1843. During this 25-year period\, he composed 66 op
eras (or 75\, counting the revised versions)\, as well as great religious
works (including three oratorios and 28 cantatas)\, symphonies\, string qu
artets\, 193 songs\, several chamber music works and sonatas. Given this e
normous production\, he was criticised as being a 'scribbler'\; but soon h
is works were appreciated for their true worth. After a period of lukewarm
success above all in Naples\, he made his breakthrough in 1830 with Anna
Bolena. In 1833\, when he finished his 42nd opera Lucrezia Borgia at the a
ge of 36\, he was already one of the most prized Italian opera composers.
Just two years later in 1835\, he reached the height of his fame with Luci
a di Lammermoor. From 1839\, he conquered the Parisian music scene\; but h
is fame was short lived\, as he was forced to withdraw from public life af
ter catching syphilis in 1843\, and to give up his position as choirmaster
at the Habsburg court in Vienna. At the beginning of his career he was st
ill overshadowed by Gioachino Rossini\, yet beginning in the 1830s he clea
rly followed his own path: pure romanticism appeared in his work and his s
tyle became more dramatic. From Donizetti's later work to Giuseppe Verdi's
mature style\, the distance was very short.
