DESCRIPTION:Introduction\nGolaud becomes lost whilst hunting in the forest
adjoining his castle. He finds the mysterious Mélisande near a stream. He
takes her back to his kingdom and marries her. However\, Mélisande and G
 olaud’s half-brother\, Pelléas\, are attracted to one another. Golaud\,
in a fit of jealousy\, instantly orders Pelléas to stay away from his wi
fe. Pelléas decides to leave but he is killed by his brother whilst takin
g his leave of Mélisande. Soon after she dies in childbirth as Golaud tri
es to find out from her if Pelléas was her lover.\n \n Maeterlinck &amp\
; Debussy \nAn undefined time and place\, wandering characters\, virtually
imperceptible\, are the main ingredients of Maeterlinck’s Pelléas et M
élisande\, a key work of Belgian Symbolism\, written in 1892. Claude Debu
ssy attended the premiere of this work at the Theatre des Bouffes Parisien
s in Paris\, not without having previously read the play which interested
him greatly. In 1893 Maeterlinck agreed that he could adapt the play as an
opera. From changes to re-writings\, this work would keep Debussy busy fo
r around ten years until it premiered in 1902. Pelléas et Mélisande was
the only opera that the composer completed although his career was littere
d with many projects for operas that never saw the light of day. With Maet
 erlinck’s agreement\, Debussy cut a series of scenes\, but\, for the res
t\, the text of the original theatre play remained relatively intact save
for a few cuts – mostly repetitions. On the other hand the casting was t
o become a source of extreme tension between the composer and the playwrig
ht: Maeterlinck was insistent that the role of Mélisande should be played
by his mistress\, Georgette Leblanc\, but Debussy gave the part to a youn
g Scottish soprano\, Mary Garden. Initially Maeterlinck was furious althou
gh\, with the passage of time\, he finally admitted that Debussy had made
the right choice. Pelléas et Mélisande was premiered at the Opéra-Comiq
ue on 30th April\, 1902. Debussy\, who had originally intended to show it
to a hand-picked audience\, was surprised to see its popularity grow with
every performance. Since its beginnings it is clear that this opera holds
a special place in the history of opera: very different from what was comm
on in the German and Italian operas of the time\, with the use of voices s
inging in a declamatory way\, until then unknown in France. To date\, Pell
éas et Mélisande remains an opera unique of its kind.
