 ebrated actor Elisabeth Vogler suddenly refuses to go on acting and falls 
 into an alarming silence. She is admitted to hospital but the diagnosis is
  not clear-cut. Alma\, a young nurse accompanies Elisabeth to an island re
 treat in the hope that that will entice her back to life. A close relation
 ship develops between the two women in which power\, manipulation but also
  tenderness and recognition co-exist. Their characters seem to gradually m
 erge.\nAFTER THE REHEARSAL\n Hendrik Vogler is directing the young actor A
 nna in Strindberg’s Dream Play. After the rehearsal they talk about the 
 play and about life and about the important role played by lies. When Hend
 rik recalls memories of Anna’s late mother Rachel\, she too appears on s
 tage. Ruined by alcohol and depression\, the former actor reproaches him f
 or his cowardice during their relationship. When she exits the stage\, Hen
 drik and Anna are left alone and dream up a future together – the imagin
 ation as a sticking plaster on the wounds which life opens.
