l to his family’s reputation and insists that Violetta leave his son\, w
hich she agrees to do but with a heavy heart. When Alfredo finds her farew
ell letter she has already fled. The same evening Violetta goes back to he
r previous way of life at her old friend Flora’s party. Alfredo arrives
there and insults her in front of everyone. Later our young heroine\, alre
ady sick\, learns that she is dying. Germont sends her a letter in which h
e announces the imminent arrival of his son who is now aware of the truth.
Alfredo arrives but so does death.\nGiuseppe Verdi\nIt was on 6th March 1
853 that an Italian audience first heard La Traviata on the stage of La Fe
nice opera house in Venice\, only 46 days after the first production of Il
Trovatore at the Apollo Theatre in Rome. Without a doubt\, La Traviata be
longs to a particularly prolific period in Verdi’s musical career althou
gh his rate of composition was already impressive. From the opening night
of his first great success\, Nabucco\, in 1842 to that of La Traviata elev
en years later\, he composed no less than sixteen operas. This does not in
clude a large number of revisions to his work where he often reworked the
scores to accommodate new singers. Along with Rigoletto and Il Trovatore\,
La Traviata is part of what has become known as the mature trilogy of whi
ch it is the final chapter. However\, this opera had less than auspicious
beginnings\, clearly linked to the mediocrity of the singers in the first
production. However\, when it was performed the following year at the San
Benedetto theatre it was a huge success. La Traviata\, which means fallen
woman\, is based on La Dame aux Camélias a novel by Alexandre Dumas fils\
, inspired by the affair of a man of letters with the courtesan Marie Dupl
essis. There was also a play version that appeared four years after the no
vel was first published. Verdi must have been inspired by the play\, premi
ered a few months earlier\, at the beginning of 1852\, at the Vaudeville T
heatre in Paris. He called on Francesco Maria Piave\, for the eighth time\
, to write the libretto. They had already collaborated on several masterpi
eces including Ernani\, I due Foscari\, Macbeth and Rigoletto. This true-t
o-life\, timeless drama whose heroine moves us with her sincerity and weak
nesses\, makes La Traviata the most popular work of the composer in our ti
me. Verdi\, himself\, placed it\, in importance\, at the very heart of his
works. In fact\, many years later\, when he spoke of his favourite operas
his professional choice was Rigoletto whilst his heart went to La Traviat
 a.
