g…\nJohann Strauss II\nAs a boy Johann Strauss II (1825-1899) was banned
by his father\, the founder of the ‘Strauss dynasty’\, from taking up
music professionally. Without his father’s knowledge\, he secretly stud
ied violin and composition\, and in 1844 he founded his own orchestra\, wh
ich initially competed with that of his father but amalgamated with it on
his death. Their repertoire consisted mainly of home-grown waltzes\, polka
s and other dances. As well as quadrilles\, polkas and marches Johann II a
lso composed some 400 waltzes (including An der schönen\, blauen Donau\,
Rosen aus dem Süden and Kaiser-Walzer)\, which rightly gained him the tit
le of ‘Walzerkönig’\, the Waltz King. With his 24-man orchestra he to
ured Europe and performed in Russia and the United States of America\, thu
s taking the popularity of the Viennese waltz to dizzying new heights. In
1871 Strauss turned his attention to the theatre for the first time and be
gan composing operettas\, apparently encouraged by Jacques Offenbach. He w
rote sixteen of them\, the most famous being Die Fledermaus (1874)\, Eine
Nacht in Venedig (1883) and Der Zigeunerbaron (1885). He also composed one
opera\, Ritter Pazman (1892)\, which however never managed to retain its
place in the repertoire\, and a ballet\, Aschenbrödel\, which was unfinis
hed on his death. All his works combine a melodic richness with tremendous
vitality and refinement\, earning him the great admiration of composers l
ike Verdi and Wagner\, but also of Brahms and Schoenberg (who even adapted
several of Strauss’ waltzes for his Verein für musikalische Privat-Auf
führungen). Johann Strauss II’s music is still so popular that it colou
 rs our image of Vienna.
