La Monnaie ¦ Concerts ¦ The Last Symphonies ¦ IntroThe Last SymphoniesMozart’s last three symphonies – composed at very close intervals during the summer of 1788 – are shrouded in mystery. Very little is known about their creation, Mozart’s reasons for composing them, and the occasion for which they were written. Is there a connection between them? Do they have a hidden meaning? Is there a secret link between the E-flat major, G minor and C major keys? There is no doubt that they constitute Mozart’s last will and testament in the symphony genre, pushing the limits which existed at the time through their great inner cohesion, and that they are among the greatest masterpieces of orchestral literature. It is a true challenge for a conductor and an orchestra to perform all three of them in one evening.
