Singing Garden

Nature and music… Singing Garden, an experimental concert installation by the recorder player Jeremias Schwarzer and spatial artist Claudia Doderer, is a highly sophisticated work that confronts current musical descriptions of nature from the Far East with those of the Western baroque tradition: instrumental music by the contemporary Japanese composer Toshio Hosokawa – whose Hanjo and Matsukaze have already been staged at La Monnaie – and concertos by the Italian baroque composer Antonio Vivaldi. Hosokawa, in his own words, aims to create an acoustic context for Vivaldi’s music that is like ‘a garden that naturally envelops the baroque concertos’. The big, intense structure that this creates makes this abstract garden a ‘visual-acoustic experiential space that invites one to engage in a profound, meditative, listening experience’.
