With Continu, Sasha Waltz has gathered key elements of her work of the previous ten years. A field of tension between choreographic, musical and visual currents of energy is generated, whilst the title denotes the continuity of the perpetual forces of nature. Sasha Waltz engages in Continu with primary impulses deriving from her major projects for museums in 2009: the artistic inaugurations for David Chipperfield’s Neues Museum Berlin and Zaha Hadid’s MAXXI in Rome. In collaboration with 24 dancers, she has created a large-format, archaic choreography. Edgard Varèse’s Arcana is the musical core of Continu. Ninety years ago, the visionary artist promulgated the combination of artistic and scientific content. Arcana evokes transformation, change and awakening, though it is not so much a matter of alchemy as a colossal nocturnal volcanic eruption, the Promethean temptation to take possession of the cosmos which is generated and encompassed by sound.
