Au monde receives the Best World Premiere award at the International Opera Awards

Su  26  April 2015

‘And the winner is…’ Four years after La Monnaie was declared by Opernwelt to be the Opernhaus des Jahres, we are proud to report that international appreciation of our opera house has once more found expression in a prestigious award.
At the International Opera Awards gala in the Savoy Hotel in London, we were presented with the award for best World Premiere for our production of Au monde.

We are particularly delighted with the award in the best World Premiere category. La Monnaie devotes considerable resources every year to new works – and nobody has made a greater contribution over recent decades in this context than Philippe Boesmans. As we see it, the award for his opera Au monde also recognises decades of collaboration. This operatic adaptation of a play by Joël Pommerat, who also directed the premiere, is a work whose atmospheric, eerie style perfectly underpins the psychological oppressiveness of its claustrophobic setting. In that respect, it is emblematic of the theatricality that is always a priority for Boesmans and that has helped to make him one of the most respected Belgian opera composers ever.

The award is a fantastic recognition of the exploratory course we have sought to steer and of the work undertaken by our teams on a daily basis. As the unofficial Oscars of the opera world, the Opera Awards celebrate the best and most innovative of what has been presented on the world’s opera stages over the last year. From a longlist of more than a thousand nominations received from critics, musicians, and the readers of Opera Magazine, a respected team selected six nominees for each category; these were then assessed by an international jury of specialists. We are well aware of the great honour that this award represents: it confirms La Monnaie’s influential status amid the great international – and often much better-funded – opera houses of today’s opera scene.

Ludovic Morlot: "It is with deep regret that I announce my decision to step down as Chief Conductor of La Monnaie/de Munt at the end of December 2014.
I am deeply grateful to Peter de Caluwe for having given me the opportunity to be part of such a vibrant, challenging and creative institution.  Working alongside members of La Monnaie and so many wonderful singers and directors has been inspiring and led to many positive musical experiences over the last few years, including the current Don Giovanni production.'
However, I feel that the orchestra and I have not managed to reach a consensus on an artistic vision and therefore, for the sake of their development as well as my own, I have made this decision to stand down."

In his reaction, our general director Peter de Caluwe, said "Although I very much regret this situation, I respect Ludovic Morlot's decision to make this radical change to his future plans.  It has been a real pleasure to have had him as part of the creative and management teams here at La Monnaie for the last three seasons.  His human approach and high degree of empathy as well as his innate musicianship have helped us to achieve so much, including a marked improvement in the sound of the orchestra.
Ludovic's departure offers us an unexpected opportunity to look to the future creatively in the context of the many other discussions we are having at the moment.
I trust that, with a continued empowerment policy we will be able to further improve the human and artistic harmony within the orchestra."

Wolfgang Rihm receives the prestigious Grawemeyer Award for his composition “IN-SCHRIFT 2”

We  3  December 2014

In February - March, La Monnaie is staging Rihms opera Jakob Lenz.

The 15-minute piece incorporates spatial effects and other inventive techniques to evoke a wide range of sound and emotion, said award director Marc Satterwhite.

The Berlin Philharmonic commissioned the work last year to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the opening of Philharmonie, the city’s iconic concert hall. At the October 2013 premiere, Rihm stationed clarinetists and percussionists at different spots around the auditorium to give the audience a sense of hearing music both near and far away.

“The work evokes dark colors and uses mostly low instruments – no flutes, violins or violas, for example,” Satterwhite said. “It begins and ends in quiet and mystery, taking many interesting paths along the way.”

Rihm, 62, a professor at Germany’s Karlsruhe University of Music, has been a composer-in-residence at music festivals in Lucerne and Salzburg. He has written more than 400 pieces in every classical musical genre, making him one of the most prolific composers of his generation.

Orchestras, vocalists, soloists and chamber groups throughout Europe have performed his work, as have orchestras in New York and Cleveland.

The university presents the prizes annually for outstanding work in music composition, ideas improving world order, psychology and education.
