Król Roger (in concert)

After a long journey in Sicily and northern Africa which influenced considerably his approach to composition, Karol Szymanowski finished writing his opera Król Roger in 1924. This work has certain similarities to an oratorio due to its spiritual subject and formal structure, and demonstrates great richness in its musical language, as it reflects the harmonic and orchestral innovations of the beginning of the 20th century as well as the influence of French impressionist music, the last German romantics and the oriental style. In this work, Szymanowski invites us to follow King Roger’s search for identity. Enriched by the teaching of Dionysos, he discovers an inner strength which proves to be a powerful source of liberty, allowing him to enjoy the complexity of life.
