La Monnaie ¦ Opera ¦ Oedipe ¦ Intro

Oedipe

Oedipe by Romanian composer George Enescu is without a doubt one of the forgotten masterpieces of the 20th century. Based partly on the work by Sophocles, it is the only opera in the repertoire which tells the story of Oedipus from the cradle to the grave. Enescu – who made melody the vital principle of his music – developed a delicate musical language in Oedipe with accents of late romanticism and abundant yet discreet returns to the leitmotiv, whose orchestration is very subtle and vivid. In the face of the remarkable bass-baritone role written by Enescu for Oedipus, the many other characters are almost eclipsed to the point of becoming fortuitous apparitions, giving more texture to the main character. After Le Grand Macabre in 2009, La Fura dels Baus and Leo Hussain bring us their powerful interpretation of this work.
