La Monnaie ¦ Opera ¦ Prinses Turandot ¦ Intro
The beautiful princess Turandot has many suitors, but she is not at all interested in marriage. She comes up with a stratagem, whereby each prince who wishes to marry her must first solve three riddles. However if he is wrong he will be beheaded. Her riddles are so difficult that all of the candidates lose their lives. Gradually, the people grow tired of this cruel game and urge their princess to choose a prince, but she remains adamant. Will she become an ice princess? Princess Turandot is an original production whose narration is enriched with excerpts from works in the classical repertoire: Puccini’s Turandot, of course, as well as Mozart’s Magic Flute, Ravel’s L’Enfant et les sortilèges, Lully’s Armide and many other pieces, covering the period from the 17th to the 20th century.
