Fierrabras (in concert)

“Tell my father nothing, / I must atone for this offence / With the blood of the one I love.” Set in a bloody time of war, Schubert’s Fierrabras centres on “love that surpasses faith and birth”. Five young adults – Emma and Eginhard, Florinda and Roeland, and Fierrabras - the title character and also the son of the Moorish leader – are torn between loyalty to their father and fatherland on the one hand, and loyalty to the person they love on the other. Joseph Kupelwieser’s libretto was inspired by Charlemagne’s campaigns against the Moors in Spain.

For this production by La Monnaie the spoken dialogues, which are so typical of this type of opera, have been replaced by a new text by the German actor and writer Ileana Tautu. In her poetic inner monologue Tautu gives voice to Florinda, one of the female characters, and reflects on events as they unfold in the opera from the perspective of a woman at the end of her life. The experienced Austrian theatre actor Elisabeth Ort lends this female character her voice and brings her memories to life. Conductor Ádám Fischer whisks us off into the atmospheric German romanticism of Schubert-the-man-of-the-theatre.
