La Monnaie - Hanjo
La Monnaie ¦ Opera ¦ Hanjo ¦ Intro

Hanjo

The young Hanjo waits day after day, benumbed, for the return of her lover. When he finally appears, she no longer recognises him. He has become a stranger and does not fit with her memory of him. Hanjo therefore begins her waiting ritual once again. Toshio Hosokawa based his second opera on the magnificent nô theatre play by Yukio Mishima. The composer summons an entirely personal universe in which western and eastern influences blend subtly: ‘I wanted to make links with traditional Japanese nô and Kabuki theatre, whilst resonating with contemporary audiences. Nô theatre comes from another world, like a dream, and Hanjo is written as a drama which wavers on the border between dream and reality, madness and reason.’ With its delicate and sensuous staging by choreographer Anne Teresa de Keersmaeker, Hanjo was highly acclaimed when it premiered in 2004.
