Now that film awards season is well behind us, all eyes shift to the world of opera with the recently announced nominations for the International Opera Awards. La Monnaie in the running for a statuette in three categories: Best Opera Company, Best New Production with our Musical Director Alain Altinoglu among the nominees for Best Conductor.
These nominations come as recognition for La Monnaie’s vision to promote the creation of new work. After bagging the award for Best New Production with our version of From the House of the Dead, we now have a shot of winning the category for the second consecutive year. This time around for Dmitri Tcherniakov’s retelling of Nikolay Rimsky-Korsakov’s The Tale of Tsar Saltan, conducted by Alain Altinoglu.
This, among his many other lauded productions in 2019, won our Music Director a nomination in the category Best Conductor. Alain Altinoglu, who’s been at the helm of our Symphony Orchestra since January 2016 has recently announced his contract extension with us until 2025. In the 2019-20 season he will lead his musicians through four more concerts as well as our season closer Der Rosenkavalier.
We would also like to congratulate our colleagues of Opera Vlaanderen for their nominations in the Best Chorus and Best Opera Orchestra categories.
Who actually gets to take home the prestigious prizes is announced on the 21st of September 2020 during the awards ceremony at Sadler’s Wells in London.
