Presentation
Summertime shudders quietly to its close…— ‘September’ (R. Strauss / H. Hesse)

The opening concert of the 2022–23 season will offer a discerning selection, featuring works from Belgium and from the wider international repertoire, tailor-made to celebrate the anniversary of the La Monnaie Symphony Orchestra. The main work on the programme will be César Franck’s most important orchestral composition, his majestic Symphony in D Minor, in which Latin and Germanic elements merge in ‘a constant ascension to pure joy and life-giving light’, in the words of Vincent d’Indy. It is an entirely different light that emanates from the magnificent Vier letzte Lieder by Strauss: the glow of the last embers of the Romantic art of the lied. The festivities would not be complete without a work commissioned for the occasion. The young Belgian composer Harold Noben, who delighted audiences at La Monnaie with his chamber opera À l’extrême bord du monde, is writing a ‘concerto for orchestra’ for the occasion, in which the soloists of the La Monnaie Symphony Orchestra will shine!
