Structure and freedom, icons and iconoclasm

Noetic and Icon: these two choreographies created by Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui with the Göteborgsoperans Danskompani form a diptych that could be seen to represent both the natural elements of air and earth and the political elements of a structured society versus a world governed by primitive behaviour. Noetic explores, through a series of movements that appear mechanical and automated, our instinctive need to structure our existence and yet, at the same time, to free ourselves from rules. Icon takes as its starting point iconoclasm and our relationship to images – how we create them and revere them, before demolishing them and replacing them with new idols. Other artists join in this exploration: the sets are the work of the sculptor and visual artist Antony Gormley, while the costumes are by the Antwerp stylists Les Hommes and Jan-Jan Van Essche. Two new works situated at the crossroads of art and our current concerns.
