‘Having created the invisible orchestra [in Bayreuth], I would like to invent the invisible theatre!’ Wagner once remarked. Although the orchestra in Der Ring ohne Worte will be visible as a prominent presence onstage, this orchestral suite fulfils Wagner’s desire to make the theatre invisible by telling the whole story of the Ring without singers. Henk de Vlieger’s adaptation links the instrumental highlights of the four musical dramas of Der Ring des Nibelungen to form a wordless story that highlights Wagner’s talent for orchestration and his dramatic instrumental power. An eye-opener for some; for others, a discovery. In this collaboration between the Belgian National Orchestra and the La Monnaie Symphony Orchestra, the US conductor Hugh Wolff, the Belgian National Orchestra’s Music Director, provides a splendid illustration of the synergy between the two orchestras.
