Cendrillon

Jules Massenet
Production from 2011
Co-Production La Monnaie / De Munt, Royal Opera House Covent Garden (London) (delegated co-productor), Opéra de Lille (Lille), Gran Teatre del Liceu (Barcelona)

Since their publication in 1697, Perrault’s Tales of Mother Goose have continued to inspire playwrights and opera composers. One of them, Cinderella, particularly appeals to the imagination because it deals with the sometimes complex relationships within a non-traditional family in a way that is both playful and magical. Cendrillon is a thrilling work alive with drama, humour and even a touch of bitter sarcasm. It is presented here with a double casting for the title role (soprano and mezzo) as well as for the role of the Prince (mezzo and tenor). Shortly after Werther and Don Quichotte, La Monnaie explores a third opera by Massenet. French stage director Laurent Pelly, who staged Don Quichotte two seasons ago, gives shape to this sparkling work.
