La Maîtrise, La Monnaie's Children's Chorus, consists of children from 9 to 14 years old and is under supervision of Benoît Giaux.
La Monnaie’s children’s choruses were founded in 1977, with the collaboration of the Auderghem Academy. Since their foundation, the preparatory choruses and La Maîtrise have contributed to many Monnaie operas: Werther, Il Trittico, Tosca, Carmen, L’enfant et les sortilèges, La Damnation de Faust, Der Rosenkavalier, La Bohème, A Midsummer Night’s Dream, Boris Godoenov, I Pagliacci, The Queen of Spades, Wozzeck and Hänsel und Gretel, and also to Monnaie concerts such as Britten’s War Requim, Mahler’s Third Symphony, Bruneau’s Requiem and Berlioz’ L’Enfance du Christ. Together with la Monnaie’s educational department, La Maîtrise realised children’s operas: Brundibar by Kràsa and Golden Vanity by Britten, which were staged at la Monnaie, but also in Bruges, Arlon, Namur, Knokke… And many of the young singers undoubtedly cherish the memories of their performances in The Brussels Requiem, Sindbad and Medúlla.
In the context of Ars Musica and la Monnaie’s educational services, the children’s choruses have premiered work by Belgian composers (Boesmans, Bartholomée, Hendrickx and Brewaeys) written solely for them. For these projects the choruses have collaborated with over 600 children, from different primary schools. Furthermore, the children’s choruses have participated to opera festivals in Utrecht, Prague (Young 2005), Villers-la-Ville (Nuit des Chœurs) and Saint-Omer.
The repetitions take place every Wednesday from 15:15 to 18:15 and Saturday form 10:00 to 13:00 (music theory included from the 2nd to the 5th year). The annual contribution is € 120 for the first child, € 95 for the second child and € 70 for the third child of the same family, registered to one of the children’s choruses of la Monnaie.
